What you Need to Go to School Online

Going to college online is a convenient way to get a degree. Online college offers flexible classes. You don't have to worry about parking, or even getting dressed, to complete coursework online. However, attending school online does require a small amount of technical know-how. Prior to signing up for online classes, you may want to make sure that you have the technical skills that are necessary to complete your classes.

Using the Internet

The main thing that you need to be able to do in order to attend college online is to use the computer and get on the internet. You should be able to use an internet browser, chat rooms, and online bulletin boards. You should also be able to use a search engine to find out information. Since your primary means of communicating with your professor and with your classmates will be over the internet, it is imperative that you can get online.

Using a Word Processor and Email

Whether you attend college online or at a traditional university, you will need to know how to use a word processor. You will need to submit research papers and other work that you produce using word processing programs. In many cases, you will also need to email your professor and perhaps other students. You may also need to know how to attach a file to an email message. Your professor may also want to email course work to you. If you have trouble doing either of these things, your local library might offer classes, or you might want to take a class at your local community college.

Installing Software

Many colleges use proprietary software that students need to be able to use to complete courses. Some individual classes may also require you to install programs that are needed for the class. If you do not know how to install software, you should know someone that can install software for you and is willing to help.

Keep Your Computer Running

If you want to attend college online, you will have to be able to keep your computer running. While your computer may work for quite some time without needing maintenance, there will be times when something will happen to your computer and repairs will have to be made, usually the night before a big test is due. If you are unable to do this yourself, you will either need to know someone who can do this for you, or you will need to pay for someone to come in and fix it.
